When movements begin

Many people first notice movement between about 16 and 24 weeks, though timing varies with placental position and whether this is a first pregnancy.

Know the pattern

There is no single normal number that suits everyone. The key is becoming familiar with your baby’s usual pattern and strength of movement.

Reduced movement

Do not wait until the next day if movements are reduced or changed. Contact your maternity service for individual advice and assessment.

When to seek urgent careNo movement or a clear reduction from your baby’s usual pattern requires prompt maternity assessment.
Medical note: Individual assessment is essential when symptoms are new, severe, persistent or changing.
